What is Math: Our Story

What is Math LLC is a premier tutoring company headquartered in Golden, Colorado, a suburb of Denver. We’ve had the opportunity to work with students across the nation, all the way from New York City to San Francisco. What is Math’s owner, Cristina, grew up in Ellicott City, Maryland and Tampa, Florida and she has been tutoring students in person since 2014. During the pandemic, Cristina transitioned to an online tutoring platform and experienced the benefits and possibilities that online tutoring can offer students and their families. It has proven to be an effective way to share resources, show work, and connect with students. Additionally, sessions are now easier to fit into a family’s busy schedule, and transportation time and costs can be eliminated. The transition to online tutoring turned out to be a positive experience for Cristina and her students, and she enjoyed being able to continue bringing kids together and lifting them up through math.

How it Works

While in-person tutoring can be challenging to plan around busy schedules (or a pandemic!), What is Math has created an easy and effective way for kids and tutors to work together from a distance. We use Zoom in conjunction with online whiteboard applications to create an engaging tutoring experience that motivates kids to do their best.

Students will need access to a laptop, desktop, or tablet that has a webcam & mic (or headphones), as well as a stable internet connection, and a quiet place to learn. Other accessories, like a stylus or drawing pad are completely optional. We will provide the Zoom links and whiteboard application access at no additional cost to you.

Parent Involvement

Parents are an important part of a child’s academic journey, so What is Math makes sure to touch base with parents frequently. Tutors will reach out to parents at agreed upon intervals based on the parent’s preference. We are happy to communicate as frequently as every session to make sure you’re kept up to speed about your child’s progress. If you’d ever like a more thorough update or conversation, just ask your tutor to schedule one with you — it’s no extra cost to you!
